A real wedding from beautiful Yorkshire… with the most wonderful flowers and a gorgeous couple! I love how the light shines through Megan’s Essense of Australia dress. I adore the meadow style flower arrangements and the way the couple gave florist Jo at Clock Dandelion free rein to create their stunning arrangements. The images are utterly wonderful and I know you’ll adore this day, captured by talented North Yorkshire wedding photographer Joss Denham.

Wedding photographer review

I would recommend Joss time and time again. He was absolutely fantastic, and also slotted right in with all our family and friends. It never felt like we had a photographer following us, and we got some incredible photographs that we will cherish forever.

Dom and I aren’t great in front of the camera, and we also didn’t want to miss any of the wedding day. We chose Joss for his relaxed style and candid photographs. It was probably the best decision we ever made. There’s an amazing photo of every single person at our wedding. We have printed them out and sent every guest a photo of themselves enjoying our day in the thank-you cards. I was so worried I wouldn’t like any photos of myself, but the couple portraits are all fantastic. We look so relaxed and happy in them. Joss really captured the essence of the day.

Venue name + review

We got married at Burtonfields Hall in Yorkshire. We fell in love with the venue (and the owner Will) as soon as we walked through the door. It felt like a home away from home, and we loved that all our family and friends could stay for the weekend. The venue was also so naturally beautiful it required very little dressing.

Inside Burtonfields Hall Yorkshire for Megan and Dom's wedding. Tables are set for the reception. Photo by Joss Denham

Dom’s Kitchen did our catering, and wedding food has never tasted so good. Dom and Emma are also such wonderful people, we loved having them as part of our wedding day. We did canapés (sausage rolls, and fish and chips), followed by a restaurant quality wedding breakfast. The cheese came from our local cheesemonger’s George & Joseph, and then we had a pizza “van” for evening food – the oven is in a converted Landrover Defender. The pizza was the first thing we booked. I just love pizza!

Tell us a little about your outfits.

I took my mum dress shopping to Chester, because that’s where her wedding dress came from. It was an Essense of Australia ivory chiffon dress, and it was nothing like what I had pictured. We walked in to the store and a sales assistant walked past holding it. I loved it the moment I put it on because it was so light and comfortable. But I’m a very indecisive person, so it took me a few months to finally buy it.

Flowers

We wanted seasonal English flowers and we didn’t specify any colours or specific flowers. I wanted all the flowers to look like they had always been there. Jo (our amazing florist) brought my vision to life, and the flowers were one of my favourite parts of the wedding.

Jo called my bouquet style “garden gathered” – it looked like it had been plucked straight from the ground, but I’m sure it actually took her hours. Our aisle focal point was a floral floor arch, and I wanted it to feel like it had grown up from the grass itself. All of our flowers came from within a 2 mile radius of the venue. Because we didn’t specify what we wanted, I felt like we got the best of what was in season at the time.

Cake maker name + review

Our cake came from a lady in our home town. We asked her if she made wedding cakes, and she said she makes great cake, and we can use it for a wedding if we want! It was a traditional Victoria Sponge with a vanilla buttercream on the outside. Picking it up and transporting it to the venue was the most stressful part of the wedding weekend.

pretty single tier wedding cake with pressed wildflowers

Stationery

Our invites were all on wildflower seed paper, so wildflowers became an accidental theme. We wanted everything to feel very natural and authentic. We used as many local suppliers as possible and all the flowers came from within a couple of mile radius from the venue.

Any crafty projects or homemade styling touches?

We handmade our garden games and we made a newspaper order of service with a crossword. People are still asking us for the answers! All of the table names were golf courses, and we got a bespoke course map created for the top table as that is where my late grandad played golf, it’s also where my new father in law currently plays.

Music & Entertainment

Music played a big part in our wedding day. We had a Piper play people in to the venue, we then had a pianist playing on the grand piano in the hall. The pianist played our ceremony music (I walked down the aisle to a version of Meatloaf’s I would do anything for love). We then swapped to an acoustic guitarist for the reception drinks. In the evening we had the band Big Shout. If I could give any piece of advice to other couples getting married, it would be to get a band. The dance floor was full all night.

Our first wedding of the month is a beauty – a gorgeous, head over heels in love couple and a wonderful setting. Hannah & Sam were married in Cornwall, had a really personal day and chose our friend and English Wedding member Hannah Timm Photography to capture their day. (They’ve shared a brilliant review for their favourite Cornwall wedding photographer below!) The venue is Roscarrock Manor Farm, the couple’s outfits are summery with a boho vibe, and the little personal touches are sweet as can be. As always, see more at @englishweddingblog over the next day or two!

Wedding photographer review

Hannah couldn’t have done a better job of capturing the colourful and fun atmosphere of the day! She really listened to what we wanted, and made the most of every great photo opportunity, whether that be when the sun was shining, or in the evening as the sun was setting. She was also brilliant at coordinating our guests to get the best possible shots! Post the wedding Hannah was amazing at getting us a selection of photos very soon after our wedding and when we then received the final photos these were presented on a really easy to use and follow website link, which made it so easy to follow the flow of the day. She also sent us a lovely selection of photos that felt really premium.

Being on the dance floor with our arms around all of our friends and family in a circle before we had sat down for dinner dancing to ‘I love you baby’ played on the Sax by (Lucy Harvey)

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

We started the day with a yoga class at the venue which my friend did for us, that was such a nice relaxing way to start the day! Those staying on site and in the nearby area came to join in. We then went down to the beach for a morning dip! We did a raffle at the dinner and gave away some items that had a bit of a funny relevance to us. We used cake toppers relevant to our nicknames (Our friends call us Gromit & Coy so we had a Gromit dog on one cake and a Coy fish on the other).

Roscarrock Manor Farm – A lovely venue, with several lovely spaces we were able to utilise for our wedding. The views for our ceremony were beautiful! Outside of this Robert and Phil couldn’t have been more helpful with trying to ensure our day went as smoothly as possible. We had a few weather challenges and they really did do all they could to help us work around it!

Tell us a little about your outfits – both of you!

My dress was of a more bohemian style, a halterneck laced dress without a train so i could keep dancing in it for the full evening! Sam was dressed in a summery, less formal chino, jacket and a floral bowtie.

Cornishmoorflowers – Beautiful dried flower bouquets, based on what we had requested. They were exactly as we wanted and they even drove them to the venue for us to ensure they were not damaged in delivery. Greys and Green Flowers – Rowena supplied a lovely selection of cut flower buckets, so myself and the bridesmaids could spend the afternoon creating our own small flower arrangement in bud vases. She was very accommodating and supplied more than enough cut flowers for us.

Cake maker name + review

Fees in Cornwall supplied a Chocolate Guinness and an Orange & Almond cake which were both very tasty and guests loved that they were a bit different to a typical wedding cake.

Stationery maker’s name + review

EveryGoose – Imogen at Everygoose created a design based on the view of the venue and this was used across our Invitations, Welcome sign and other stationery. It was so unique, she is very talented!

Wedding readings?

Our celebrant was a close friend of both of ours who we have both known as long as we have been together. My younger sister read a poem she had written about us as our reading. We sang ‘Ain’t no Mountain High Enough’ in the ceremony which was played by Lucy Harvey on the Sax.

Musical entertainment

Our Saxophone player Lucy was amazing and really set such a fun positive tone for the rest of the day!

Wedding Coordinator – Sophie Walker – the prep of our wedding was quite chaotic due to some high speed winds so we weren’t able to do any set up until after 10am on the morning of the wedding. Sophie was amazing in turning it all around so quickly with minimal stress! The day wouldn’t have gone ahead without her.

Wedding photographer review

Jodie photographed our wedding in June 2023 and we could not be happier with the results! Jodie (and Holly who assisted) captured the day beautifully and were happy to get involved in photographs in fields with horses, rowing boats and more! The photographs perfectly depict the happiness and joy we felt throughout the day and we feel very lucky to have such wonderful photos to look back on in the years to come. We received some sneak peaks that we could share the day after our wedding which were wonderful to be able to share with family who couldn’t make the day, and the rest of our photos we received only a few weeks later, edited perfectly showing the story of our day. Jodie had some fantastic suggestions and ideas on confetti shots and locations creating some of our favourite photographs of the day. We couldn’t have wished for anything more. Thank you Jodie x

Your best moment or memory

Lauren: The best moment for us both was when I arrived and the music began to start walking down our aisle. For me it was the realisation that all our friends and family had joined together to help us celebrate and knowing we were moments away from being stood together again and sharing how much we wanted to share the rest of our lives together.
Nathan: It’s hard to pin down one specific moment but after much consideration it would be seeing Lauren in her dress for the first time. We had spent the previous day apart and I stood nervously under the oak arbour on the island we would say our vows and the second I saw her everything melted away like it was just the two of us.

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

We knew that we didn’t want a traditional church wedding, however we did want some form of ceremony. My husband knew of handfasting which is an ancient wedding custom where different coloured individual ribbons are placed over the couples joined hands by the celebrant. we where lucky enough to have a family member Duncan step up and provide a beautiful ceremony, and our mothers laid the ribbons over our hands. The ends of the ribbons are then tied into a knot to represent commitment to each other. This was such a special, symbolic moment and something many of our guests had never heard of before.

Wedding venue:

Three Shires Weddings

We are very lucky that this venue is actually our home. We had known since a family wedding the previous year that we would like to offer the area as a wedding venue as it gave us so much freedom to have any style and quirks we would like without the restrictions of many already set up venues. Once we had chosen the space where we would like to conduct the ceremony (island accessed by a wooden bridge) and reception (grass area at the end of the lake) we had the freedom to build our dream wedding, in our case using 2 tipis, decorated by family with bunting and various flowers and greenery all sourced locally from family gardens and hedgerows! The outside space extended into an orchard again decorated with bunting as well as hay bale seating, hammocks and fire pits for keeping warm into the evening (and for some marshmallow roasting!).

Tell us a little about your outfits – both of you!

Nathan: I knew from the beginning that tradition tails were not going to be my style at all so Myself and my grooms men wore a simple sage tweed 3 piece brought from Next with forest green ties to match in with the bridesmaids and our outdoor natural aesthetic.
Lauren: I wore a fitted column dress from Wed2b with a short laced train and off the shoulder, 3/4 lace sleeves. It turned out to be a very warm day so I was glad the dress was lightweight!

Florist name + review

Sam the flowerman based in Banbury. These guys were great as they created my bridal bouquet, bridesmaids bouquets, button holes and an extra bouquet for my late grandfather. The flowers in the tipi and around the venue were all kindly created by my mum and other family members and friends. The flower wicket baskets were a personal favourite as well as the wild flower bouquets in the wooden boat from my mother in law sourced from wild wood based in Farnborough. We later received a wonderful gift from DJCreations of some of our wedding flowers in resin which a great unexpected gift and keepsake from the day.

Stationery maker’s name + review

Our save the dates and wedding invites were made and printed on canva. We chose not to have menus but the name places were kindly written in calligraphy by a friend.

Any crafty projects or homemade styling touches?

Quite a few! We investing in a Cricut a year before our wedding which I would recommend to anyone getting married soon! We created various signs including for our guest book and for a tea and coffee station. We chose to give homemade favours of wildflower seeds pouches made by my lovely sister Hannah. We chose to name our table after flowers which were beautifully painted onto plaques by DJCreations and were the perfect finishing touch to our tables. The arch under which we held the ceremony was made by Nathans brother and elegantly decorated by my talented sister in law.

Wedding readings?

We had 2 readings at our wedding, one by my Uncle Dave was from Corinthians and one by Elizabeth which was a prayer to Freyja (Norse)

Wedding photographer review

My husband and I were so happy with John as our wedding photographer. He was so professional and easy to work with, and he made us feel really comfortable in front of the camera. We loved that he took a lot of candid pictures, so we were able to capture the real emotions of the day. The end results were absolutely stunning, and we will cherish these photos forever.

The outdoor ceremony was truly special, and the bridesmaids’ and best men’s speeches made it all the more emotional. It was a joy to celebrate with everyone on this special day.

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

We had our official wedding ceremony at the town hall on Thursday, so it didn’t make sense to exchange rings again on Saturday. Instead, we incorporated a knot tying ceremony into our celebration. Also because the wedding was part French part English we changed few things to fit both.

Weddings can be hilarious, they can be beautiful, they can be a rollercoaster of emotion. They’re always out-of-this-world incredible!

Chris and Paula’s day is bursting with every emotion you can imagine: the love and joy in this alternative Yorkshire wedding is off the scale.

As ever with our faves York Place Studios, this wedding is all about people, connections, emotions and keeping it real. The happy couple are brilliant: bride Paula rocks two amazing outfits and owns the phrase ‘best day ever’ – this is crazy, amazing and epic. Loads more on our instagram! Enjoy!

From London wedding photographers York Place Studios.

“Paula and Chris had a truly rock n’ roll outdoor wedding that fitted our mantra and approach perfectly. You never knew what was going to happen next in a day character-filled, energetic, wonderfully chaotic, funny and truly heartfelt. Bubble gun fights, cornfield antics, pink feather duster limbo dancing to a cardboard cut out of Noel Gallagher … there was always plenty to shoot with people just being people with an abundance of personality; just the way we like it.” ~ York Place Studios

Wedding photographer review

We had the most perfect, fun-filled day and Ben’s photos captured the essence of the guests, venue, atmosphere and day so perfectly. We’ve had so many wonderful comments from our friends and family about how professional both Ben and James (his assistant) were on the day and how well they blended into the background (shown by some of the great action shots!). We’re absolutely chuffed with the finished photos and will cherish them forever. Cannot recommend Ben more (and James, his assistant). Both were so calm and relaxed on the day and fit right in with everyone else. The photos are BRILLIANT!

Your best moment or memory

We had so many special moments – it’s hard to choose one. The most recommended advice we had from everyone leading up to the wedding was make sure you have a sneaky 5-10 minutes to yourselves after the ceremony where you can just have a mini chat and take in the day together. We found we had some perfect moments to chat when we were doing our couples photos, but also managed to catch each other a few more times throughout the day. These little moments are what we’ll really cherish.

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

We were quite traditional with most aspects of the wedding day. We opted for a round top table rather than a straight one which we preferred as it felt like we were part of the party with the guests rather than everyone looking at us!
Our friend Pete played guitar leading up to the ceremony / during, and him and my sister sang the song Ben proposed to me with just before we signed the register which was wonderful!

Rather than a traditional guest book we purchased a blank jenga block and got guests to sign a block each, as we thought we could end up with lots of various books laying around after the wedding (photo albums, guest books, scrapbooks, etc.). We’ve now varnished this and have it to play on games nights with a few drinks.

Videographer name + review

We’re super lucky to be surrounded by so many wonderfully talented friends and family. As both of us studied Film at university, one of our good friends came along and filmed the day for us, and as Ben edits he put together a beautiful 10 minute video with all our favourite snippets from the day.

Venue name + review

Our venue was the wonderful Crown Lodge in Wye. Stephanie (the venue manager) and her team were absolutely fantastic. In the lead up to the wedding Stephanie was always on hand either via phone or email and answered every question (no matter how trivial it felt). We had a meeting in person 6 months before and another one a few weeks leading up the wedding to make sure we had everything in place. Stephanie also helped us get the ceremony sorted and organised through Kent weddings so the officiant could do our ceremony from the garden area of the venue. On the day the team were all super smiley and friendly, our guests all complimented how wonderful they were too. Cannot stress how much we loved this venue, it was absolutely perfect for us and the best views over Kent for some amazing photographs too.

Russell and his team at Kitchen of Kent were brilliant – they worked so well with the Crown Lodge team for a seamless day and experience for us and our guests. The food was phenomenal – so many of the guests spoke to us about this on the day and after. We wanted to go for something a little different to the traditional three course meal – as Ben and I both cook paella for our friends this seemed like a no brainer (and the Kitchen of Kent ones are to die for!). We had a taster included in our package which we did together a year before the wedding – a lovely day out with so many yummy dishes to try and get us excited. We also had a selection of pizzas in the evening which Russell cooked on a trailer round the back of the venue which were delicious.

Tell us a little about your outfits – both of you!

Georgina got her bridal gown from an independent shop in Tenterden – Vicki’s Bridal Boutique. Sisters Hannah and Megan run the shop and are both super knowledgable and friendly, with a relaxed approach. The boutique is gorgeous and the dresses, veils and accessories are all beautiful. It was a wonderful experience and great to have the whole place to yourself and your guests. I went once for a browse and tried a couple on, and a second time where I found my dress!

Ben bought his suit (and the best man / ushers / FOB) from Moss Bros. Kevin and his team at the Ashford Outlet branch have helped Ben and his family out with suits for weddings in the past and are fantastic. They were gone for several hours and each were properly measured and taken care of. The suits were a gorgeous colour and the colours matched the bridesmaid dresses so well (a happy accident!).

Florist name + review

Our flowers have a wonderful story. Georgina’s Dad is an avid gardener and grew a massive selection of them for us, that we cut the day before the wedding and mixed in with a few of the ‘pick your own’ buckets from Blooming Green. Two days before the wedding we went with a few family friends and picked our own flowers, which was a nice day out with everyone in the lead up to the big day. The day before the wedding we had a trusty team of helpers, including the mother of the bride and her best friends to arrange the flowers. These then went into a variety of glass jars that we’d spent months leading up to the wedding decorating with hessian / lace material and dotted them all over the venue. Blooming Green put together the bouquets for the bride and bridesmaids using a selection of the flowers we’d picked the day before – they were gorgeous and smelled all minty and divine!

Cake maker name + review

Our cake was made by Ben’s talented sister, Hannah. It was a delicious lemon cake with lemon icing and decorated with citrus fruits. Safe to say, we froze a few portions to have once we were back from Italy, as well as taking some on our honeymoon!

Stationery maker’s name + review

We made all our stationery ourselves – Ben drew the pictures for our invitations, and table decorations using photographs of our wedding rings as the centre of each object. We both studied Film at university and now work in film, so wanted to incorporate this slightly into our wedding by choosing our favourite films as the table names. We also custom made little stamps to seal our invitations and thank you cards!

Any crafty projects or homemade styling touches?

We’re super fortunate to be surrounded by many crafty people and enjoy craft projects ourselves. We made loads of different things for the wedding day, including a lifesize kerplunk and donut wall for the venue, all the wedding stationery, table decorations and little games quizzes – one of our favourites that’s done a few rounds post wedding is our ‘Guest Who’ which had a selection of the guests on. Ben’s Mum also hand painted a selection of pebbles for a few sets of a ‘Tic-Tac-Toe’ table game, we decorated over 100 jars for the flower decoration around the venue, made pallets to show the order of the day and display a selection of ‘family tree’ photos which included all of our family and extended family on their wedding days.

Wedding readings?

We had two wedding readings – one that we pulled together using loads of our favourite film quotes about love that Ben’s sister, Emily, read. Our second reading was written for us by our talented friends, Harry and Grace, and they read it out together – it was absolutely fantastic, and we loved how much this reflected our friendship with them both over the years.

First dance song? Playlist recommendations?

Our first dance was ‘As Time Goes By’ from the film Casablanca. This was our first date together so the song from the film is very special to us.

Hair + makeup name + review

Georgina, the MOB and the bridesmaids all hair their hair and makeup done the morning of the wedding at the bride’s parents house. Makeup by Lydia Rae Makeup and hair by Jeanette Felstead. Georgina had trials with Lydia and Jeanette in the lead up to the wedding – I was after something natural for both my hair and makeup as i’m not someone that wears a lot of makeup. Lydia was super friendly and talked through each stage of the trial and products to help me with a natural style which I loved! Same for the hair – Jeanette tried two different styles in my trial as I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go hair up or down. I bought along a clip and a few other accessories I was playing with too so we could try multiple options. On the morning of the big day they were both super relaxed and blended right in with the morning!

We honestly have some of the most incredible locations for weddings here in the UK – and the new laws brought in last month allowing couples to tie the knot outside, although still only on premises with a wedding license, give even greater opportunities for stunning wedding backdrops. Adam & Abbie chose to tie the knot at Sandy Cove Hotel in North Devon, and we’re ever so grateful to the happy couple for telling us a little about their amazing day.
