Wedding photographer review

Steve was the most friendly and helpful photographer we could have asked for. Nothing was too much trouble and he made our day so special and captured everything we could have wished for and more. As a family we aren’t very photogenic people so when we looked back at the photos it was so natural and beautiful it was perfect. He couldn’t have captured our day more perfect. We felt so at ease and didn’t feel awkward at all. Didn’t even notice he was there half of the time!

Your best wedding moment or memory

Walking down the aisle the sky looked grey but as soon as we said I do the sun came out of the clouds and it was the most clear blue day for the rest of the night. We felt like someone was looking down on us to make our day more perfect that it was already.

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

We spent the 4 days with our family in the venue and the day after the wedding the 17 people who were staying with us me and Jordan held a murder mystery evening as cowboys and cow girls and then went to the cow restaurant for our dinner. It was the perfect way to end the wedding weekend. I also had my maid of honour do a speech at the wedding and she is actually Jordan’s sister but we’re incredibly close.

Venue name + review

East Afton Farmhouse. Our wedding venue was absolutely perfect we went to view it in January 2021 when everything was closed due to lockdown but as we was allowed to go we view it just the two of us I was really glad for that as it gave us the opportunity to view it on our own and really see how it would feel to get married there and we couldn’t not choose the venue as our wedding venue, we didn’t even need to view any more. The staff at the venue did absolutely everything to make the day so perfect even though it’s self catering it didn’t feel like it leading up to the day I didn’t have to lift a finger and all the small details you don’t think about it they did and made it more prefect than I could have imagined.

Tell us a little about your outfits – both of you!

I had a blush pink a line appliqué wedding dress with three layers of white netting over the dress to give the subtle hint of pink as well as a a long cathedral length veil with matching 3D flowers all the way down the veil. I also had white sparkly van trainers as my evening shoes to give my outfit the pop of my personality.

Jordan wore a dark navy Marc Darcy suit with a sage green tie to match our sage green style as that’s the colour the bridesmaids wore. He even had his own pop of personality as I gave him a surprise present on the morning of the wedding a pocket watch with the wedding date engraved into it and his mum gave him cufflinks with his favourite band’s logo on as his own part of him to wear.

Dress or suit shop name + review

David’s bridal from Birmingham. The suit was from Visual Impact on the Isle of Wight. Our suit shop was so helpful and went through all the alterations through the time we needed to have the suit there was we picked the suit a while before the wedding so it was good to have the help when needed and nothing was too much trouble and alternations were spot on.

A very special mention: Alterations by Tara

I would love to mention the lady who altered my wedding dress from Gems Bridal. Alterations by Tara. She was absolutely amazing and helped me so much. I gave my dress around 6 weeks before the wedding and nobody else would help me that close to the wedding or wouldn’t help me as my dress wasn’t from their shop specifically but as my dress was from the mainland she was more than happy to help and made my ideas come to life and helped me feel so comfortable in my dress. I had multiple fittings and she even steamed my dress for me ready to go it was absolutely perfect.

Florist name + review

Afton Blooms. Jo was absolutely amazing and so helpful she helped us capture my thoughts of what I wanted into real life and did an even better job that I could have imagined. My flowers were done so perfectly and matched the men’s button holes perfectly as well as my flower girls flower crown. She kept me in the loop by asking for pictures of what I wanted and helped by showing me a long the way what she was doing.

Cake maker name + review

Frost bite bakery. Our cake was absolutely amazing and was exactly how I wanted it to look like and it tasted even better. We had vanilla on the base, salted caramel in the middle and coffee at the top and we had nothing but compliments on the flavour and the look. It was timeless and elegant it was perfect and exactly how we wanted it.

Any crafty projects or homemade styling touches?

We bought all the decorations ourself mainly from the range but I made all of the bridesmaid bouquets from scratch my self by buying multiple large bouquets and taking them apart to make smaller ones and adding extra little details into them by using eucalyptus and hessian string around the stems and glued them so they would look realistic. We bought gold antique mirrors for the wedding signs and wrote on them using acrylic white pens for the order of the day and our welcome signs. My mother in law hand wrote all of the name places and also made all of the wedding favours which were cookies the shape of the Isle of Wight and round ones with our names and date on in sage green.

All of our family and friends spent the night before setting up the rooms and tables and sprinkling the wooden hearts and tea lights in the little glass jars I had been collecting over the last two years. Even my 14 year old brother was on a ladder helping put the white netting around the wedding arch and tying fake flowers to the corners. We created all of the decorations our selves and I wouldn’t have changed it at all.

First dance song? Playlist recommendations?

It was earth angel by Marvin berry as it was played in one of our favourite films back to the future. We made all our playlists our selves and asked friends and family to give us songs they would like to be played and added them in. Our dj also had a QR code on the tables for people to scan and send songs in for him to play.

Hair + makeup name + review

Yasmin Lavell my name up and Megan Dye did my hair. I found both girls separately but they both did an amazing job on me and my bridal party. I felt so beautiful and also still felt like me at the same time which as someone who doesn’t wear a lot of make up or is very low maintenance I was so incredibly happy with how I looked as I felt so special and was nothing was too much trouble.

Sometimes a wedding is so full of joy it just makes me grin. I’m beaming at my screen today as I share Emily & Jon’s wedding all the way from sunny Cornwall. This gorgeous pair chose a stunning venue overlooking the sea. Even their ceremony room had incredible ocean views. Images are by lovely Hannah Timm Photography, who gets a lovely review from the happy couple. As always, lots more on our insta @englishweddingblog!

Wedding photographer review

Hannah was wonderful – we’re so glad to have found her and have had her be part of our special day. From the initial phone call we could tell she would put our camera shy selves at ease, and we had a lovely time meeting her ahead of the wedding at our engagement shoot. On the day she worked tirelessly to help us capture all the special moments, and we had so many guests tell us afterwards how friendly and approachable she’d been. Hannah is definitely a pro at capturing special moments in Cornwall – taking us down the coast path for evening shots on the beach, and using her creativity to get some very special shots when the rain started.

Your best wedding moment or memory

One of the key memories that sticks with us was exiting after our ceremony, champagne in hand, to be showered in confetti by our friends and family in the beautiful grounds of the Polurrian on the Lizard hotel. We got so lucky and the sun had broken through the sea mist and was beaming down on us in the stunning cliff top venue. And all to the soundtrack of the Cornish Piper playing the bagpipes for us.

Venue name + review

We got married at the absolutely gorgeous Polurrian on the Lizard hotel, which is on the clifftops in Mullion, Cornwall. We wanted somewhere unique and having spent several happy holidays in this very special part of Cornwall, there was nowhere else for us. The Vista Lounge where we had our ceremony is breathtaking on a clear day, with uninterrupted views of the Atlantic – we shall never forget taking our vows to that backdrop! The food and drink is exceptional, and Georgia and the team helping plan the wedding were fantastic in the run up, and worked absolutely tirelessly on the day to ensure everything came off without a hitch.

Tell us a little about your outfits – both of you!

For the wedding dress, I wasn’t hugely fussed and didn’t want to spend loads. After initially looking around at second-hand options, I found and loved the Elowen dress from Wed2B. I loved swishing around in a big princess skirt for the day! Only afterwards did we find out that Elowen is a girl’s name of Cornish origin – it must have been meant to be. The groom wore a suit with tails in French navy blue with ivory waistcoat and tie – which along with the rest of the groom’s party outfits were hired from Stephen Bishop in Woking. The team there were brilliant in helping fulfil Jon’s vision.

Florist name + review

We had our flowers done by Lyn at Sweet Pea Floral Studio in Helston – who was a wonderful find by the mother of the bride. We met with Lyn at her Studio a couple of months before the wedding, and she was so knowledgeable we were 100% comfortable leaving the flower designs with her. The bouquets she created in creams, yellows and purple/blues to complement our teal and gold theme were simply beautiful.

Cake maker name + review

Whilst professionally made cakes are beautiful, we decided not to invest much budget in the cake and bought a two tier chocolate cake from M&S. The team at the Polurrian kindly decorated it with fresh fruit for us and we were so happy with the final result.

Any crafty projects or homemade styling touches?

We’re not the craftiest of individuals but there were a couple of extra special touches. One of the bridesmaids spent months from when she found out we had booked our wedding hand drying rose petals from her garden for us to use as confetti. We were so touched and have some saved as a keepsake. Our tables were names after stations on the Northern Line, where we met, worked and lived for years, and we wanted our table plan to somewhat resemble a tube map. Having sent a design to Delicate Designs, she created a wonderful sign in our wedding colours, which we still have in our living room to this day.

Wedding readings?

Selecting the readings was Jon’s job, which he took very seriously. We had three readings in the ceremony, read by some special friends and family. They were: – Eulalie by Edger Allen Poe – An excerpt from Les Miserables (but not a miserable one, we promise!) – The Lovely Dinosaur

Tell us anything you did differently – we love hearing about NEW traditions (or none at all!)

Not sure this is “different” as such but we had a pinata hung in our evening reception to bring back some childhood nostalgia for Jon. Having grown up in Texas apparently they were a birthday staple!

First dance song? Music recommendations?

Our first dance was to Killing the Blues by Robert Plant and Alison Krauss – we listened to the album which this is from, Raising Sand, loads when we were first dating so it was the perfect choice for us.

One other very special thing was one of Emily’s oldest friends Jay Moussa-Mann singing as she entered the ceremony. Jay is an independent artist who can be found on Spotify – she sang everyone in with an acoustic version of her song Green Toyota, which will forever be a firm favourite of ours.

Other than that, us and our guests were 80s and 90s babies, and I believe our brief to DJ Monty (booked through Perfect Party Cornwall) was “cheesy pop please” 😉 He did not disappoint! The groom and one of this friends also ended up having a solo dance to the Jurassic Park theme tune, so there’s a recommendation :D.       [Love it! ~ Claire x]

Hair + makeup name + review

Kimberly Holland and one of her associates did the hair and make up for the bridal party. They were both so chilled and lovely to spend time with, and got involved in the excited atmosphere as we were all getting ready, despite having to get up at some unholy hour to arrive with us for 6.30am! Kimberly also did an amazing job making me feel confident on the day, and making my very fine and thin hair look glam.

Today’s stunning couple were married at Chippenham Park Hall in the springtime, and styled their day with the most incredible cherry blossom and pink peonies. Maryanne’s dress is incredible: the designer is Jenny Packham and the embroidery detail couldn’t be more perfect for the springtime! She looks beautiful – every bit the English springtime bride – and Adam her perfect match in his made to measure suit, bought in Dubai.

The colour theme was pink, white, green and gold. Both the marquee and church were covered in cherry blossom with real trees lining the aisle in the church. In the marquee the mixture of trees and hanging flowers from the ceiling was truly spectacular! The floral creations were the work of the amazing Lucy Vail. Maryanne told me her favourite flowers were the peonies and hydrangeas – the smells were simply divine!

How did you choose your photographer?

Nick and Maria actually photographed our friends’ wedding two years before we got hitched and we fell in love with their work. It was a no-brainer when choosing the videographer and photographer for our wedding.

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer?

Yes – beyond happy!

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

We got the first 20 photos during our minimoon which was such a treat!

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Incredibly good fun! We made memories with our favourite people in the world that I know will last a life time.

Where did you find your suppliers?

Mostly recommendations

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Shop around for options! Also try and do what you can yourself if you’re on a tight budget.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

The band!! They were truly fantastic. We had The Arts Clubs House Band and they had everyone on the dance floor all evening.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We had personalised stationery that a friend of ours designed from scratch in line with our colours.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I actually tried on about 30 dresses before I found this one – I tried dresses in New York, London and Dubai – all were lovely but all very white and traditional – similar to dresses I had seen many times before. I actually found the Jenny Packham dress on instagram and loved it from the moment I saw it. Even though when I first tried it on it looked terrible, I fell in love with the dress instantly and the fact that it didn’t fit perfectly only inspired me to get firmly on the weight loss wagon!

Tell us about your accessories?

A gorgeous hair clip that my very talented make up artist made, a bracelet and earrings from my mother, shoes from Oscar de la Renta and a bespoke veil with peacocks sewn into it. I actually got the shoes before the dress! I found them in Oscar de la Renta in New York and fell in love with the colour, style and the fact that they were so incredibly comfortable!

And what did the groom wear?

I wore a made to measure suit from Dubai. All the groomsmen wore pink Hermes ties.

Beautiful bridesmaids –

They all wore pink dresses from Asos with low and bowed backs. The flower girl and page boy outfits were made to measure.

Hair and make up –

We hired the professionals! 🙂 Boe Wright www.botias.co.uk

The wedding flowers

It was very much a spring wedding with a colour theme of pink, white, green and gold. Both the marquee and church were covered in cherry blossom with real trees lining the aisle in the church. In the marquee we had a mixture of trees and hanging flowers from the ceiling – it was truly spectacular! My favourite flowers were the peonies and hydrangeas – the smells were simply divine! I actually didn’t pick the flowers – we gave our amazing florists a brief and she brought the entire thing to life!

Crafts and makes –

We did postcards and pens. Thetitle at the top of the table plan stated ‘Where are you going tonight’ and each table was named after a different location we had visited (with postcards of pictures we had taken). For example, our table was called ‘Eating Peri Peri chicken in Portugal’ and another was ‘Diving in the Maldives’. Each guest was asked to write up a message (each place had a personalised pen with #ThePeakys on it) on the postcards and post them through the London letter box in the corner of the room – we haven’t gone through all the postcards yet but what I have read is hilarious!

The wedding cake:

We had a five tiered cake covered in petals. Each layer was a different flavour and the top two were also gluten free! We had everything from plain chocolate to toffee and banoffee. It was from The Hazelbury Kitchen

Entertainment –

The Arts Club House Band – https://www.theartsclub.co.uk

We had a music director in the church is shipped in a grand piano from Boston and arranged/conducted the choir and orchestra – they were unbelievable!

We had indoor fireworks surrounding us when we did our first dance, we left the wedding in a golf cart, we had two huge double decker buses taking guests to and from the church.

Words of wisdom for other couples:

Enjoy it – be present in every single moment and take time to drink in your surroundings – the sights, smells, the little details. Also don’t let the little things get to you pre-wedding, it will be the best day of your life regardless of what colour the flowers are and if it rains or not (it rained on our big day and it didn’t make a bit of difference!

What’s the best thing about being married?

Spending the day with our favourite people all in the same place 🙂

Julie and Aaron’s wedding photos had me hooked from the moment I saw them – the gorgeous smoke bomb images, Julie’s stunning smile and that amazing Caroline Castigliano dress!! They married in April at Pennard House, with all the cherry blossom in full bloom. The venue was styled by RD Events, flowers are by lovely Bramble & Wild, and there are some lovely rustic touches from Bath Vintage Hire Company. This is a day full of beautiful old English charm, and I hope you love it as much as I do!

We went to a local wedding fayre and saw a photo of a couple with smoke bombs and then looked through the rest of Ryan’s display stand and we were hooked! We knew we wanted Ryan without even looking at the cost!

Were you pleased with your wedding photographer? Do tell… we love a brilliant review!

We hardly saw him, but in a good way!! We wanted natural pictures of the day and Ryan just blended in and captured just that. From the moment we booked Ryan he became more of a photographer he became a wedding guest.

I was so nervous about receiving our photos and that’s only because i’m no where near photogenic and hate having my photo taken but…. they were stunning!! I can’t stop looking them and saying is that really is?? Just beautiful photos of our beautiful day.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

No!! Ok i’ll Try!!
A hot but perfect spring day to remember forever!

Your wedding style or theme:

We didn’t really have a theme but I wanted it relaxed and classic with a touch of charm. So went for a lot of rustic natural materials and touch of rose gold. The one thing I knew I wanted was to arrive in a VW classic beetle! So we hired two! One for me and the other for our bridesmaids! Both travelled miles to make our day and they were both beautiful classics.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

I had worked in the wedding industry so i knew a few people I definitely wanted to use. We visited Wedding fayres and venues with open days. I scrolled through days of Facebook pages, Pinterest and Instagram to find a lot of Inspiration.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Imagine yourself at a wedding and what do you remember?? No one notices the little things like wedding favours or flowers around your venue only your bouquet!
Spend your money on a good photographer. Your photographer will capture memories! Buy a comfy dress as you’re in it all day and shop around! Off the peg gets you the dress of your dreams!

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Definitely the photographer and also the venue. Our photographer was amazing from booking to the time we had our photos through our door.
Our venue was also amazing! Our coordinator just made everything run smoothly and relaxed, exactly what we wanted!

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

Aaron’s mum works in a stationery printers so was a no brainer really!! I help design it then off to the printers for free!!

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

Yes!! I had previously bought one but it just didn’t feel right then I spotted one come up on a bridal shops Facebook page and thought wow! That’s the one!!

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

Caroline Castigliano dress from Carina Baverstock Couture, Bradford on Avon Nr Bath, Somerset

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I’m not one for jewellery so it was very minimal. I wore a pair of Rachel Simpson shoes which are sooo comfy but ended up so hot on the day I was in my sandals by the afternoon.

And what did the groom wear?

Aaron and my sons wore the same Peter Posh suits. A lovely light weight navy suit with brown tweed waistcoat. A touch of dark red in the ties for certain football teams and brown shoes.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

My bridesmaids wore beautiful Two Birds multi-way dresses in a rose gold.
My flower girls wore Ivory and gold ribboned dresses from Monsoon. I bought a few hair pieces from ebay for a couple of pounds and looked amazing. They all looked stunning as they always do!

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

Hair was done by my usual hairdresser, Josie Louise. I was going to have it alll down but as it was so hot Josie pinned a few parts up. Gemma Advent was my make up artist. I have known her for years and very talented. So we got pampered for the day by these two beauts!

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

I knew who I wanted by their posts on Instagram!
Bramble and Wild in Frome, Somerset a little florist up a petite cobbled road is renowned for amazing bouquets. I knew they would know what I wanted and they sure did.
I wanted naturals colours with lots of greenery and when they arrived I cried!!

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

It didn’t really need much styling outside as the cherrry blossom did all the dressing naturally!
The coach house, with all its characteristics and history didn’t need much either but we did add a few personal touches. A large rustic A n J in lights and rustic trestle tables hired from Bath Vintage Hire Company.
We had a lovely lady callled Rachel from RD Events who styled everything for us and she certainly gave it the wow factor.
Not forgetting our Thatchers Cider favours with quest names to place in each seat!

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

We didn’t really make anything apart from the table plan and photobooth. I used two old frames I bought and just printed them up to match.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We went naked! We are not fans of icing, just the cake so these cakes are ideal! As it was Easter we had mini eggs stuck around it but somehow they went missing off the cake! Funny how the kids seem to be the same height!!!
It was made by a very talented lady called Melanie Todd.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We could not recommend our DJ enough. Darren Sims is not only a DJ but a very talented musician. It was hard as everyone was outside as the weather was so hot but he stil entertained us lol and he was amazing with the kids.
During the day we had a company called Clayzer Lazer. Forget silent discos this is silent clay pigeon shooting!! We had this between the ceremony and food and this was great fun through the afternoon.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

The day goes so fast! I didn’t believe it but it does!!
Write everything down, make list and relax. Enjoy the day and if things goes wrong, so what! They probably won’t know as not everyone has your wedding planner folder!
Don’t change to high heel shoes if you always wear flats…. you get my drift!

What’s the best thing about being married?

We are even happier than we were before. We were told it would be no different but they were truly wrong! We are stronger together and can not wait for what’s waiting to happen to us.

Welcome to the first weekend of autumn! I’m hoping for a crisp sunny afternoon with hints of bronzed leaves and for cosy snuggles with my man and my favourite jumper. How about you? … Oh, but you’re here for wedding ideas so I’ve got a little treat up my (woolly!) sleeve for you this morning, with a gorgeous wedding from The Plough At Leigh. The stunning couple are Nikki and James, and their photographer is our newest sponsor, lovely Terence Joseph Photography.

Wedding photographer’s website:

https://terencejosephphotography.co.uk

We met Terence at an open day at The Plough, he was so friendly and knew the venue very well so it was an easy decision to make.

We couldn’t have been happier with Terence, he was very professional and had us and our guests feeling very relaxed and at ease. He even managed to photograph some family members that were set against having their photo taken. He was interested in what ideas and visions we had. I felt we clicked and it was such a pleasure to work with Terence, he was very thoughtful and couldn’t do enough for us from the beginning right through to when I met him to receive our beautiful album and canvas. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for a professional photographer, he did an amazing job.

We were blown away the first time we saw our photos and they were even more beautiful than our expectations. Terence captured our day perfectly. I was proud to show them off to our friends and family and I love looking back through our album.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

A beautiful classic spring barn wedding.

Your wedding style or theme:

We tried to go with a classic vintage theme. We wanted a typical white wedding with a rustic spring feel to it.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

I found most of my suppliers online but I did use www.amanda-jane.co.uk for our chair hire and also decorations for the barn as she had lots that went with our theme. I also followed #springweddings #barnweddings #rusticweddings #classicvintageweddings on instagram which gave us lots of great ideas that we could make our own.
I would highly recommend www.magical-times.co.uk who supplied our photobooth, it went down a treat with all of our guests and we were given an album at the end of the night.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Shop around. There are so many different places doing the same thing for different prices, I made sure I did my research before buying anything.
It can be easier to buy a package but it often works out cheaper and more personal if you shop around and piece things together yourself.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

We spent more on the things that would make our day memorable such as the classic Rolls Royce, the photobooth for our tipsy guests to enjoy in the evening and my beautiful wedding dress that I still love to this day.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

I purchased our wedding stationery from Tree of Hearts, they have some lovely invitations. I also purchased some bits from Etsy. It’s a really lovely website with lots of individual sellers bringing lots of different ideas into one place.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I fell completely in love with my wedding dress, my sister picked it out for me but the moment I tried it on and saw myself in the mirror, I knew it was the one even though it wasn’t what I had imagined myself wearing.

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

I purchased my dress from Felicity Cooper in Knutsford, Cheshire (now closed).

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

My shoes were from Charlotte Mills, they were blush with a little rose gold and so beautiful and comfortable. Comfort was so important to me knowing that I would be wearing them for a long time, I didn’t take them off until late into the evening which is saying something as I’m not really one for heels. They come with a sixpence inside of one shoe, so there’s your something old.
My fiance bought me my earrings which were silver love knots. My sister bought me my something blue which was a silver bracelet with a blue stone. My something borrowed was my diamante hair pins and I had a very simple silver necklace with a tiny heart bought by one of my bridesmaids Fiona.
My hair piece was made up of silver leaves and tiny pearls. Again, I wanted to keep my look simple and classic and I think I achieved that.

And what did the groom wear?

James kept it simple, he wore a navy blue three piece suit with brown shoes, a crisp white shirt finished off with a yellow tie, his suit matched our ushers, page boys and our little boy Jacob.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

My girls were dressed in navy. My two bridesmaid were in knee length dresses and my sister who was my maid of honor was in a floor length dress. They all had their hair in loose curls with a small clip of gypsophila, they also had a bouquet of gypsophila which really stood out against their navy dresses.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

I couldn’t have been happier with my hair and make-up. I’m very fortunate that my friend Eve is a make up artist and did a beautiful job of my make-up, she knows me really well so kept my look simple and classic, I didn’t want to be too made up.
My hair was just perfect. My hairdresser Tracey did an amazing job, I had a braided up style and received so many lovely comments throughout the day. I still love looking back at photos of my hair.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Denise Thompson Designer florist in Otford, Sevenoaks.
We had lots of lovely wild spring flowers, the colours were mainly pinks and purples and really stood out in the barn.
My bouquet was made up of cala lillies and gypsophila. The bridesmaids and flowers girls had bouquets of gypsophila and the flower girls also had adorable little flower crowns. Denise did an amazing job helping us choose our flowers and my mum was an absolute star for arranging them in the lantern jars the day before the wedding along with a helping hand from one of my bridesmaids. We took them to the barn the day before and they looked so beautiful and exactly how I had imagined them, thanks mum.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

We didn’t want to take away the beauty of the barn by covering it in decorations, it’s so beautiful with the dried hops and fairy lights, we just added a few personal touches.
I remember the barn looked so beautiful as I walked down the aisle.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

We had lots photos of myself and James printed and scattered around the barn from all of the years we’ve been together. It was really nice looking back over our memories. My mum made some navy and gold pom poms for the garden, which were a lovely touch. I can’t even explain how much my mum helped with everything leading up to the wedding, she was amazing.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

Our beautiful wedding cake was made by a lovely lady called Alli Dockree at Glitter n Ice. It was three tiers and each tier was decorated in a way that told a story of different stages of our lives together. It was so unique and personal to us and tasted amazing.

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We had a DJ who came highly recommended by the barn, we thought it was best to use someone who had played at the venue before. Gary did a brilliant job and certainly got everyone moving.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Your big day is over before you know it so take a moment to stand back, look around and take it all in. You’ll be glad you did.

What’s the best thing about being married?

The best thing about being married is enjoying each day and making memories as a proper little family. James, myself and our gorgeous little boy Jacob.

Hey lovely! How has your week been? I’m having a relaxing day after spending the week wrestling with my calligraphy website and uploading a bunch of brand new modern calligraphy workshops! Head over to http://calligraphy-for-weddings.com if you’d like to find out about those. And Bolton / north west brides and grooms, my next one will be at Smithills Hall on the 6th of October – we have places available and I’d love to see you there!

But onto today’s wedding – and forgive me for waffling because it is a STUNNER! Gorgeous couple Claire and Andy married at Trevenna Barns in April, choosing a rustic feel for their day with the most beautiful colourful flowers. It’s all so romantic and this pair are clearly SO much in love it almost bursts from my screen.

“Trevenna Barns really didn’t need much styling at all. I collected jam jars, lots of jam jars and wrapped hessian around them and used them to hang from the chairs down the aisle with flowers in them.

It was all about the flowers for me and the lighting was by Alex Darling (Light Up Weddings). My flowers were truly stunning. I wanted a large bouquet full of bright spring colours and that is exactly what I got. I recently lost my dad so I had his wedding ring tied into my bouquet which was very special to me. My florist was Alexandra Sylvester and she was so lovely. The flowers in the venue were a talking point and they were all so beautiful.

I found Alexa on Instagram and loved her adhoc style.

We met Alexa before the wedding and liked her straight away and knew that we’d made the right choice. On the day Alexa was amazing, we wanted all natural pictures and that’s exactly what we got. Most of the time we didn’t even notice photos were being taken but the end result was fantastic. Alexa put a few photos on instagram and I loved them all!

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

I found most of the suppliers on instagram. As we live a couple of hours away from the venue I looked at the hashtags to find exactly what I was looking for.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

I saved money by not buying unnecessary extras. I knew what I wanted and just went with it.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

I’m so pleased I spent money on the photographer and videographer and also a great band.

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

My sister in law did all our invites for us and I did the table plan and centre pieces with the help of a stationery company.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I only went to one wedding dress shop and it was the fourth dress I tried on, I just knew!

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

I bought my dress from Wed2b

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I’m not a heel wearing girl so I chose white converse and used flashing led laces! They were great fun!

And what did the groom wear?

The groom is a RAF pilot so was in his full uniform and I wouldn’t have wanted him to wear anything else.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

I had my two nieces as my flower girls (ages 8 and 7) they wore gorgeous white dress with pink sashes and sparkly shoes. They loved dressing up.

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

I am very lucky and I work with a make up artist (Lisa Want MUA) so she did my hair and makeup.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

I wanted a naked cake on a tree slice. My uncle did all the tree slices for the tables and the cake. Andy said he could make the cake so I left it in his capable hands. He’s never baked a cake before but he did it and it looked and tasted amazing. Everyone was very impressed!

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

We had the band I Love Amp and they were fantastic. We also used Westcountry Photobooths for our photo mirror.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Don’t get stressed. Enjoy every moment of the planning and try and do everything that you want and not what anyone else wants you to do. I loved the planning and actually miss it!

What’s the best thing about being married?

We’ve been together for seven years now but being married just adds something extra. It’s not just a piece of paper, it really does mean a lot more than that and I just love it!

Hey lovely! Thank you so much for coming back to English Wedding. I just know you’ll adore today’s feature, with beautiful bride Julia and her gorgeous new husband Joe celebrating their marriage at Shiplake College, Henley on Thames. They’re a fabulous, fun couple whose wedding is full of personality – from their first look (the photos are just wonderful!) to the floral styling around the venue. Images are by my lovely friend Ayshea Goldberg Photography, who gets such a fantastic review from the happy couple.

We came across Ayshea’s website while browsing online and really liked her style of photos.

Ayshea was a pleasure to work with! From the moment we met her, we knew we wanted her to be our photographer – she was professional but also fun and relaxed, and put us at ease immediately. She was great on the wedding day – she helped calm any nerves and was unobtrusive the whole time but captured the day perfectly.

Tell us about the moment you saw your wedding photos for the first time?

It felt like we were reliving the day! Everyone says to you the day flies by – and it’s true! So it’s great to look through the photos together and reminisce and also to see things that you missed on the day. We were really impressed with the quality and creativity of the photos – we will treasure them forever.

Wedding month:

April

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

The happiest day shared with our most favourite people

Your wedding style or theme:

A relaxed rustic style with a coral and green colour scheme

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

Blogs, online searches, personal recommendations

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Decide what the most important things to you are and spend money on those.

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Venue/catering – we are both foodies so we wanted the food to be top quality, we weren’t disappointed.
Photographer – I think you get what you pay for and we loved our photos.
Band – they are the evening entertainment so it’s worth getting a good one!
Favours – we spent a few hundred pounds getting some German Lebkuchen hearts decorated and personalised for each guest but it was worth it as everyone loved them and it was nice reminder of the day

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

We bought quite a few things from Hobbycraft such as the table card stands and mini easel holders and we ordered a few bits from Etsy.com including the wedding book and direction sign. We borrowed some bits from friends who had got married before us. One of our friends created the table plan and table name cards.

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

YES! As soon as I walked in The Tailor’s Cat in Cambridge, I knew I’d find my dress there – they have so many beautiful dresses! I knew exactly what I wanted and when I told the sales assistant, she pulled out three dresses which fitted my brief perfectly. I loved the long lace sleeves, fitted lace bodice and flowy Grecian-style skirt.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I wore a pearl and crystal flower hair piece from Ivory and Co and similar style earrings also from Ivory and Co. I ordered my shoes online from Light in the Box – they were satin ballerina pumps with a sparkly strap.

And what did the groom wear?

A DKNY blue suit from Moss Bros, a white shirt from M&S and a Liberty-print tie with coral flowers.

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

Teal lace dresses from M&S

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

I hired a professional make-up artist and a hair stylist – they were both recommended to me. I thought about doing my make up myself but I was glad I didn’t have to on the day and I loved my hair and make up.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

The flowers were one of our favourite things – the florist did a beautiful job of them! I had a large rustic style bridal bouquet and bouquets for my bridesmaids composed of coral coloured Roses, Hypericum berries, Antirrhinums, Spray Roses, Dianthus, Astilbe, Lisianthus with loosely trailing Asparagus, Thalaspi foliage and bound with hessian ribbons. These were also used for the table decorations, pedestals and the corsages/button holes. We also had Gypsophila chair decorations for the ceremony.

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

No, we kept it to a minimum as The Great Hall at Shiplake is a stunning building with oak panelling on the walls and wooden beams. The flowers were our only real decoration.

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

We roped in friends and family to help with these elements so Julia’s sister made a beautiful photo board and our friend made the table plan and table name cards.

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We decided not to have one big cake. Instead, the venue offered to make us an array of cupcakes in various flavours which were delicious!

Entertainment: any musical recommendations, surprises or treats?

Our band, Switch, were fantastic – we can’t recommend them highly enough! They really got the party started and had nearly everyone on the dance floor the whole night. We received a lot of compliments on them from our guests.

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Enjoy every moment! The day flies by so make sure you take a few moments out with your partner just to soak it all in.

What’s the best thing about being married?

We had been together a long time before we got married so for us it is continuing to share your life with the person you love and building more memories together.

Our midweek wedding is a blissful, breathtaking, glorious celebration of love at Nottingham’s Carriage Hall. Stephanie and Peter were married in April, which they chose as a time of new beginnings – and the perfect month to start their married life! The lovely couple always knew they wanted a humanist wedding ceremony: “Humanism celebrates the idea that we have one life to lead, so we need to live it in the here and now, that we need to make the most of life’s beauty and riches every day; it focuses on the goodness of humanity and community, family and friends; and the importance of love.

“We worked with a wonderful celebrant, Laurie Cohen, to write a ceremony that was completely unique and personal to us. Working with a Humanist celebrant allowed us to reflect back on our relationship and really think about why we wanted to get married. It was a really lovely process and probably one of the most fun parts of planning the wedding!

We actually came across our photographer via looking for wedding videographers. We went to a wedding fair at the Carriage Hall where we met Daiga of No Ordinary Films and loved her work. We saw that her husband, Martin Cheung, was also a Nottingham wedding photographer and that we could book them as a package. Both Daiga and Martin had done weddings at the Carriage Hall before, so that seemed ideal!

We absolutely loved our photographer and videographer! Martin was very efficient when it came to responding to emails and enquiries in the lead up to the big day, which really helped put our minds at rest. Martin and Daiga were brilliant all day, highly professional and yet very friendly and fun. They weren’t intrusive and managed to capture brilliant shots without people even noticing they were there. We would highly recommend both of them.

I received the email with link to the photographs just as I was walking into work in the morning and had to restrain myself all day not to look at them without Pete! I’m glad I waited because it was so special to look through them together. We were both so pleased with the shots Martin had been able to capture and with the overall quality of the images.

We received the link to our wedding video whilst we were on our honeymoon in Bali. We managed to connect to WiFi whilst sat on sun loungers on Seminyak beach. As soon at the video started I started crying! Daiga had managed to capture our whole day perfectly in 7 minutes. Both Martin and Daiga are great story-tellers.

Our family and friends are a central part of our lives and we loved the idea of bringing everyone together for our wedding. What made our day so special was seeing everyone genuinely getting along and interacting with each other – even if they’d never met before! The atmosphere was amazing and we felt overwhelmed at the love in the room.

Wedding venue:

After much venue searching (we visited 8 different venues around Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire) we found The Carriage Hall and absolutely fell in love with its high ceilings, huge windows and exposed bricks and beams. It was just the vibe we were looking for. The Carriage Hall is beautiful and elegant, but still managed to feel cosy and informal. The staff were absolutely fantastic too and ensured we had a seamless day and made sure everything looked and ran perfectly for us.

Can you describe your wedding in fewer than 10 words?

Full of love and laughter, uniquely personal and imperfectly perfect.

Where did you find your suppliers? (Blogs, magazines, recommendations?)

We mainly found all our suppliers through recommendations from friends and family, but it was useful going to wedding fairs too and chatting to suppliers to get a good idea of prices and what different people could offer.

What’s your top tip for saving money?

Prioritise what’s important to you and spend your money on those things without regret (if you don’t spend your money on what’s important to you you’ll regret that more!). But do try to keep things in perspective. Don’t get too caught up spending money on something just because Pinterest/Instagram made you feel like that’s what you need to do – only get something if you really want it!
Some costs are unavoidable (like the venue hire) but you can get away with spending less on other things and they can look just as good as if you’d spent twice as much!

… and which elements of your wedding are you glad you spent more on?

Definitely the photography and video!

Where did you buy or source your wedding stationery – or was making it a labour of love?

I made everything! I used to work as a freelance designer and still do a bit of design on the side, so I designed the Save the Dates and the wedding invitations and printed them myself. It was quite fun and saved us an absolute fortune!

Did you fall in love with your wedding dress?

I certainly did! My dress was nothing like what I thought I would go for. I had been madly Pinning lots of boho, 70’s style lace dresses – I wanted long sleeves and a high neckline… However when I tried on these type of dresses they did absolutely nothing for me – I felt like I was wearing my Nanna’s curtains! From trying on these dresses I also realised pure white was not my colour. I’m quite pale so I needed something that would compliment my skin tone. When I tried on my champagne-coloured, princess-style dress I just fell in love. I felt like Belle from Beauty and the Beast – not the look I’d originally been going for, but quite fitting as we went to Disney Land for my Hen party!

Wedding dress designer and bridal boutique:

The dress was by Sassi Holford, bought from The Ivory Chapter in Melbourne, Derbyshire and altered by seamstress, Rachel Bull. The original dress didn’t have the bardot sleeves, these were made by hand by Rachel and she added extra applique detail around the waist to tie it all together.

Tell us about your accessories: jewellery, shoes and anything else!

I bought my wedding shoes from Rachel Simpson. What was bizarre was that when I showed my Mum my shoes she disappeared into her wardrobe and brought out the shoes she had worn for her wedding 37 years ago – without realising it I had bought a nearly identical pair!

And what did the groom wear?

Pete’s suit was from Brigdens Menswear in Derby. What was lovely about this was that my dad had actually bought his wedding suit from Bridgens when he married my mum 37 years ago!

Beautiful bridesmaids: what did your best girls wear?

I bought the bridesmaid dresses from ChiChi London. Bridesmaid shopping was actually pretty painless. I gave the girls a choice between 5 different dresses and it just so happened to work out that 3 went for all pink and 4 went for the floral, so it worked out quite nicely!

Hair and make-up – did you DIY or hire a professional?

Both hair and make up was done by Dana Berry for Beau Bridal.

Describe your wedding flowers. Who arranged them for you? (florist details would be lovely please)

Unfortunately our florist let us down spectacularly on the day, so we can’t recommend them. Despite having booked them months in advance and paying the full balance 2 weeks prior to the wedding as requested, our florist completely forgot our booking. I was waiting for my bouquet to arrive and when it hadn’t shown up by 12pm (we were getting married at 2pm) I rang The Carriage Hall to see if it had been dropped off there by mistake with the rest of our arrangements. This was when we found out nothing had been delivered! We rang the florist who replied with “What wedding?”. !!
I can’t describe how thoroughly disappointed we were and the amount of chaos it caused. My dad, cousin and brother had to drive out to a local garden centre and had me on FaceTime trying to choose some arrangements for the tables! (The staff at East Bridgford Garden centre were absolutely amazing). Pete and his Best Man had to leave the Carriage Hall when they were supposed to be greeting guests and and nip to M&S to buy me a bouquet! Our florist did manage to pull some things together in the end but it wasn’t really what we’d envisioned… still, we didn’t let it ruin our day!

General styling – did your venue need much decoration?

One of the main reasons we loved The Carriage Hall was that it was already a beautiful venue. With it’s exposed brick walls, high beamed ceilings and huge arched windows it didn’t actually need a lot of decoration. We bought faux ivory and rose garlands for the window sills, strung some bunting across the mezzanine balcony and placed a few candles here and there, but other than that the interior didn’t feel like it needed much else!

Crafts and makes – tell us about any homemade elements of your wedding… did you enjoy them?

I made quite a lot of things for the wedding myself: Save the Dates, invitations, table plan… for the table place settings I hand-wrote everyone’s name on parcel tags which took forever! I borrowed a chalk board from my work and wrote the welcome sign myself and I hand made a felt flower garland to sit on top. I enjoyed making all these elements for our big day, it really did feel like a labour of love!

The wedding cake: what kind of cake did you choose and why?

We were a bit taken aback by how expensive wedding cakes were so we decided to go for a good old fashioned Marks and Spencer cake. We had a fun tasting session at home with the family and it was a no brainer to go for the chocolate cake with ganache filling!

Words of wisdom: share your best piece of advice for other couples:

Do it your way. It’s so easy to be swayed by other people’s opinions, but at the end of the day it’s YOUR wedding – everyone else is just a guest.
Also, a good spreadsheet always helps! My wedding planning spreadsheet had no less than 12 tabs and it helped me stay completely organised.

What’s the best thing about being married?

The best thing about being married is that feeling of being united as a pair. It’s that next step in building our lives together. We love that it’s now official! We’re finally husband and wife!
