Why choose the Cotswolds?

The Cotswolds is renowned for its natural beauty, endless picturesque landscapes and timeless charm. Choosing a Cotswold wedding venue means you’ll be surrounded by rolling hills, lush greenery, and quaint stone architecture. The area is also home to some of the most luxurious and sought-after wedding venues, ensuring that your special day is both beautiful and memorable.

Consider the Venue Style

When looking for a Cotswold wedding venue, it’s essential to consider the style and atmosphere you want for your wedding. Are you dreaming of a grand manor house or a rustic barn? For a luxurious and elegant setting, consider venues like Wiltshire’s Kin House and beautiful Euridge Manor. These locations offer breathtaking views, historic architecture, and exquisite gardens that will make your wedding day truly special.

On the other hand, if you prefer a more relaxed and intimate setting, there are plenty of charming barns and countryside venues to choose from like Kingscote Barn and Cripps barn. The Cotswolds cater to a variety of tastes and styles, so take your time to explore different options.

Location and Accessibility

The location of your Cotswold wedding venue is crucial. Consider how easy it will be for your guests to travel to and from the venue. Some popular venues, like Elmore Court, are conveniently located near major motorways, making it easier for guests coming from different parts of the country or abroad.

Additionally, think about the surrounding area. Do you want a venue that’s close to a particular village or town that you love? Or perhaps you want a more secluded location with uninterrupted views of the countryside? The Cotswolds offer both options, so decide what’s most important for you and your guests.

Capacity and Facilities

Before you fall in love with a venue, make sure it can accommodate your guest list comfortably. Each Cotswold wedding venue will have different capacity limits, so ensure that the venue you choose can host the number of guests you’re planning to invite.

Additionally, consider the facilities available at the venue. Does it have accommodation for guests who might want to stay overnight? Are there separate areas for the ceremony, reception, and dancing? Venues like Hyde House offer extensive facilities and stunning settings for both the ceremony and the reception, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable celebration.

Budget and Availability

Your budget is another critical factor when choosing a Cotswold wedding venue. Luxury venues like Kirtlington Park and Sudeley Castle offer incredible experiences, but it’s essential to ensure they fit within your budget. Don’t forget to ask about what’s included in the venue hire fee and any additional costs that might arise.

Availability is also key. Popular Cotswold wedding venues can get booked up well in advance, so start your search at least a year in advance and be prepared to be flexible with your dates. Booking early ensures you have the best chance of securing your dream venue on your preferred date.

Ready to find your perfect Cotswold wedding venue?

Finding the perfect wedding venue is an exciting journey that requires careful consideration of your style, location, guest list, and budget. By taking the time to explore different venues, attending venue open days and dedicating time to research each venue, you will get a clearer idea of what the perfect venue for you looks like.

I hope these tips help you find your dream Cotswold wedding venue. If you want my expert advice, recommendations or want to work with me to help plan, book and coordinate your special day, get in touch with me here.

Planning a wedding be overwhelming and often we feel like we must stick to ‘traditions’ purely because that’s the way things have always been done. This can be the case with wedding flowers, but for us, wedding florals are more than decorations – they’re a reflection of a couple’s personality and to bring that to life, colour is vital.

I’m pleased to report that we have seen couples begin to realise they don’t have to rely on the traditional ‘white’ or very plain themes that for so long weddings have been associated with. It’s possible to still have stylish, romantic designs, but still work in some colour that represents who you are as a couple to give it a powerful meaning.

Here’s four colourways and styling trends for the 2024/2025 wedding season that hopefully inspire you to incorporate colour to your special day:

Graphic showing 3 pictures of wedding flowers in warm oranges, soft blushes and hot reds

SUMMER SUNSET

An eclectic mix of rich colour that gives you a warm, satisfied feeling.

We’re seeing more couples get bold and experimental with colour. Infusing bright, bold hues like oranges and hot reds to give a warm and full feel, echoing the way some might feel about their relationship.”

“This kind of style is a perfect example of how to do block colour, but without compromising on delicacy or romance. Perfect for couples that are truly looking for something different.

SEPTEMBER DUSK

Soft muted tones complimented by a delicate dose of colour, reminiscent of a romantic September sky at dusk.

Some couples still want that whimsical romantic look and feel from their florals. However, they want a fresh, modern take on it. The recent beige boom in fashion and interior has made its way over to the floral world too and we’re starting to see hints of white, buried in beige and muted tones to give it that soft blend that is then perfectly romanticised by pinks and peaches.

Incorporating soft colour like peach or pink is a great way to elevate wedding florals, ideal for couples that want to retain some tradition, but with a fresh modern take on it.

CALIFORNIAN SUMMER

A colour clash that shouldn’t work but does. Unapologetic, bold and suggestive of a hot, dry Californian summer.

We’re starting to see people experiment with colour and create these beautiful bold clashes that delivers something truly spectacular on a special day.

Perfect for summer outdoor ceremonies, these hot pinks and vivid blues never fail to wow guests and stand out brilliantly on pictures. The Californian Summer colour palette is the perfect example of using bold colours, but in a way that brings the right balance of character and a unique elegance to your wedding day.

PASTEL ELEGANCE

Innocent and pure using gentle pastel tones to bring an exquisite touch of elegance to your wedding style.

Many couples often say they want classic florals, but with a twist. We use gentle pastel combinations like peaches, creams, lilac and blue stems to keep it bridal, but complimented by elegant colours that give it that unique edge.

This colour palette often uses a mixture of flower types to give it a wild meadow feel, but has also been tamed and expertly arranged for an intricate, elegant display. It’s a pure and innocent arrangement that is infused with a drop of pastel personality.

Don’t be afraid of colour, embrace it and I promise you won’t be disappointed!

Congratulations on your engagement! As you embark on the exciting journey of planning your wedding, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed with the myriad of decisions you need to make. One of the most crucial aspects of your wedding day is the photography, as these images will serve as timeless mementos of your love and celebration. But where do you start?

Whether you’re just beginning to plan or are knee-deep in wedding magazines and Pinterest boards, finding the right photographer can seem daunting. To help you navigate this process, I’ve put together some essential questions to ask, key things to look for, tips on making your final decision, and what to expect once you’ve booked your photographer.

These insights will not only help you choose the perfect person to capture your day but will also ease some of the stress, allowing you to focus on the joy of your upcoming wedding. So, let’s dive in and get you one step closer to saying “I do” with confidence and peace of mind.

5 Basic Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer

  1. Can I see a full gallery of a recent wedding?

Now as a photographer I would say this is the first and most important question you should ask any photographer you like the look of. There are so many cheats that photographers can use these days. There are styled shoots with models, AI editing and even AI photos that are complete fabrication. When you see an entire wedding, you get to see how a photographer works throughout the whole day, not just the select moments.

  1. What is your photography style?

Understanding whether they specialise in traditional, photojournalistic, or artistic styles will help you see if their vision aligns with yours. If you choose a pure documentary approach to a wedding you should not expect group photos or portraits, however most photographers, like me, will offer a blended approach to this. Just be aware that the ‘traditional’ groups and poses take longer than you may think.

  1. How do you handle low-light situations?

Weddings differ to most other types of photography as wedding photographers can’t postpone for weather or wait for the perfect light. Low light used to be a problem but with newer cameras we can photograph easily in low light. I’d suggest asking your wedding photographer how they handle bad light. For example, harsh, strong sunshine or a room with artificial lighting and small or no windows. Ask to see examples! You don’t need to know the technical aspects; your eyes and heart will tell you if it works.

  1. What is included in packages?

More does not mean value, what you really pay for in the experience that the photographer brings to your wedding. A wedding photographer will have worked in all situations and made mistakes long before attending your wedding. If you want a pre wedding shoot or an Album they are great additions but time is the thing that should come first.

  1. What is your backup plan if you cannot attend?

2020 brought this to the table more than any other time, we really found out the hard way that things beyond our control can happen. Photographers tend to be solo workers so what if they fall ill, break a limb or even just their trigger finger. Your photographer must have a backup plan, listed in their contract. Ask what it is and how they implement it.

5 Things to Look for in a Wedding Photographer

  1. Portfolio Consistency

As mentioned earlier ensure their work is consistently high-quality across different weddings and environments. Does the colour stay consistent, are the skin tones accurate, does the grass look green? These are all photographic style attributes see below when consistent but inconsistency shows a photographer who is experimenting and developing a look.

  1. Personality and Communication

A photographer’s personality can greatly influence your day, so finding someone who makes you feel comfortable is key. Now don’t get me wrong I’m not saying some photographers are terrible but we don’t get on with everyone in life, that’s just fact. Meet your photographer and have a conversation, you’ll know pretty quickly if you gel. If your photographer doesn’t instantly make you relax how are they going to do it on a wedding day when under time pressure?

  1. Reviews and Testimonials

Look for feedback from previous clients to gauge reliability and satisfaction. Testimonials on a website are good but not checked for authenticity. Head over to google or Trustpilot for reviews direct from past couples. Do they all describe a similar experience?

“As a wedding photographer myself, it was so important for me, and my now wife to feel comfortable on our wedding day. Photographing another photographer’s wedding can be daunting, but Nathan took it all in his stride. He captured the day beautifully, with a strong combination of reportage and posed images, and his creativity shone through. Nathan listened to exactly what were were looking for, and he exceeded our expectations on the day. More importantly, we all enjoyed his company on the day.” ~ Az & Tiff’s review for Libra Photographic on their English Wedding blog

  1. Experience and Expertise

Experience, particularly with weddings, ensures they can handle any situation smoothly. Wedding photography includes reportage/ documentary photography where they need to observe, people management without being rude, portraiture but other than those obvious ones. Food photography, product photography, still life photography, Landscape photography, aerial photography, stamina (yes, photographers need to be wedding fit) and work well in the Team of suppliers or vendors at your wedding.

  1. Post-Processing Style

Check their editing style to ensure it matches your vision for your wedding photos. Just search sepiagate to see one bride’s reaction to a post processing style. A photographer’s style is their working preference and you employ them for it. The photographer in question here had consistent style which wasn’t noticed by the bride until after the delivery of her photos. As an extreme metaphor you wouldn’t as Monet to paint like Picasso would you? When selecting a photographer you are choosing their artistic view on the world around them.

How to Make a Final Decision

  1. Compare Portfolios Side-by-Side

Lay out the best work from your top choices to see whose style resonates most with you.

  1. Meet in Person or Virtually

Personal interaction can reveal a lot about their professionalism and compatibility with your personality.

  1. Evaluate Packages and Pricing

Consider what each photographer offers and how that aligns with your budget and needs.

  1. Review Contracts Carefully

Ensure you understand the terms, including delivery timelines, rights to images, and cancellation policies.

  1. Trust Your Gut

Ultimately, go with the photographer who not only meets your criteria but also feels right.

What to Expect Once You’ve Booked Your Photographer
  1. Initial Consultation

A detailed discussion to understand your vision, timeline, and any specific shots you want.

  1. Engagement/Pre wedding Session (if included)

A great opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera and build rapport with your photographer.

  1. Pre-Wedding Communication

Expect regular check-ins as the wedding date approaches to finalise schedules, shot lists, and any last-minute changes.

  1. Day-of Coordination

Your photographer will blend into the background while capturing candid moments, as well as directing posed shots seamlessly.

  1. Post-Wedding Process

Editing and post-processing typically take a few weeks and longer during high season. You’ll usually receive a preview first, followed by the full gallery, and then any albums or prints as per your package.

Now that is a lot of information but choosing your photographer and videographer is in my opinion something that can make or break a wedding as we spend a lot of time with you on the wedding day, we meet all your guests at some point in the day and give you one of the only things that last longer than a few months after your wedding, an album of memories that get shared for generations.

With so many options, styles and combinations to choose from, picking your wedding colour palette can take time, and that’s okay! This decision will ultimately guide the rest of your wedding design decisions, so keep reading if you need some advice and top tips for how to choose your wedding colour palette.

As an expert wedding planner, I’ve seen how the right combination of colours can transform a venue and create the perfect atmosphere for your special day.

The Importance of colour at your wedding

Your wedding colour palette sets the tone for the entire event. It influences everything from your invitations and flowers to your bridesmaids’ dresses and table settings. A well-chosen colour scheme will create a cohesive and visually stunning wedding, that is personal and memorable. If you want every detail to feel intentional and harmonious for a picture-perfect wedding, then it all starts with the vibe and aesthetic you choose.

Draw inspiration from the season

You don’t have to mirror your wedding to the season you are getting married in, but it is a popular design choice when it comes to weddings. Lots of couples want to reflect the floral colours that are in bloom at their venue or match the colours of the trees in their floral arrangements. For example the summer is a season bursting with colour, so you might opt for vibrant hues, lush greenery, and lots of different colours to reflect the energy and vibe of summer. For an autumn wedding you can choose more golden warm tones to reflect the weather and orange leaves on the trees.

Consider your venue

Your venue plays a significant role in determining your wedding colour palette. If you’re getting married on the beach, you might opt for soft blues, sandy neutrals, and touches of gold to mimic the seaside. For a countryside wedding, pastel pinks and lavender or cornflower blue with pops of natural greens can highlight the natural surroundings.

If your wedding venue already has vibrant interior design or historic designs, then you might want to choose a colour palette that reflects the colours already present at your wedding venue.

Reflect your personal style

Your wedding is a reflection of you as a couple, so your wedding colour palette should be too! Think about the colours that resonate with you both. If you love bold, dramatic hues, don’t shy away from incorporating these fun colours into your flowers, bridesmaid dresses and tablescape. If you prefer wearing outfits that are minimalist and chic, then choosing a more elegant and understated pastel and neutral colour palette might be more in your style.

Balancing your colour palette

When choosing your wedding colour palette, it’s essential to balance the colours to avoid overwhelming the senses or creating a cluttered look. A good rule of thumb is to choose one or two dominant colours and then add in one or two accent colours. For example, you could have a base of soft pinks and whites, accented with gold and greenery for a sophisticated summer wedding.

Wedding trends or a timeless option

While it’s great to consider current trends, it’s also important to choose a wedding colour palette that you love rather than opting to just join a trend. Trends come and go, but your wedding photos will last forever so choose an aesthetic that you both love. Classic combinations like navy and blush or pink and lavender are timeless choices if you want an elegant and sophisticated design.

Enjoy the design process

Choosing your wedding colour palette is a fun and creative journey that allows you to infuse your personal style into your big day and have fun choosing decor and floral details that will transform your venue.

Your wedding day is one of the most memorable days of your life, and how you choose to arrive at your venue can add a unique touch to your celebration. Whether you envision arriving in a luxurious car at a grand country manor, stepping out of a charming vintage bus at a rustic barn, or making a sustainable entrance by walking, your choice of wedding transport can reflect your personal style and values. Let’s explore these options and their environmental impacts.

Luxury Cars for a High-End Country Manor Wedding

Arriving at a country manor in a luxury car like a Rolls-Royce or Bentley sets a tone of elegance and grandeur. These vehicles offer comfort, sophistication, and a high level of detail that complement the stately backdrop of a manor. The polished aesthetics and quiet interiors ensure that your arrival is as serene as the picturesque setting.

Environmental Considerations

While luxury cars are often associated with higher emissions, the impact of hiring a luxury vehicle for a one-off event is relatively minor in the grand scheme of things. For instance, a Rolls-Royce Phantom travels on average about 15 miles per gallon of fuel. If your venue is 30 miles away, your journey would contribute approximately 20 pounds of CO2. To offset this, consider investing in carbon offset programs that support projects like reforestation or renewable energy, which can balance out the emissions for the day.

Vintage Buses for a Cute Barn Wedding

For a barn wedding, vintage buses offer a whimsical and nostalgic element. They enhance the rustic theme and provide practical transportation for guests, reducing the number of vehicles needed. This choice ensures everyone arrives together, adding to the communal feel of your celebration.

Eco-Friendly Edge

Hiring a vintage bus can be more environmentally friendly than multiple cars. By transporting multiple guests in a single vehicle, you significantly reduce the total emissions per person. Moreover, the charm of a vintage bus adds to the wedding aesthetics while aligning with eco-conscious values by minimising overall fuel consumption. However – vintage vehicles have high emissions, so they’re not recommended for travelling long distances.

Walking to your wedding!

For the truly eco-conscious couple, walking to your wedding is perhaps the most sustainable option. This choice eliminates vehicle emissions entirely and can be a serene way to start your new journey, especially if your ceremony and reception are in close proximity or at the same venue.

Celebrating the Journey

Walking allows you to slow down and savour the moments leading up to your ceremony. It can be a peaceful, reflective time or a joyous parade with your bridal party and guests. To make walking a part of your day, consider a scenic route that offers beautiful views and photo opportunities. You can even add musical accompaniment with a roaming band or musician!

Combining Options

You don’t have to stick to one mode of wedding transport. For example, you might choose a luxury car for your arrival at the ceremony and arrange a group walk to the reception. This approach lets you enjoy the elegance of a luxury vehicle while still embracing the sustainability of walking.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right wedding transport is more than just a logistical decision—it’s an opportunity to make a statement about your personality and values. Whether it’s the classic luxury of a Rolls-Royce, the communal charm of a vintage bus, or the heartfelt simplicity of walking, each option offers its own unique benefits and considerations. By thinking about the environmental impact of your choices and exploring ways to offset emissions, you can ensure that your wedding transportation complements your vision of a perfect day while aligning with your values. Remember, this journey is not just about reaching your destination. It is also about the memories you create along the way.

Confession time: I am no expert on wedding make up! Fortunately, I have some fabulous advice from Saffron, who is! Here are seven makeup faux pas you should avoid to keep your makeup intact during your big day, plus 3 more tips for grooms and people with facial hair.

Saffron Hughes, professional makeup artist at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, shares 10 tips to perfect your summer wedding make up look!

1. DON’T opt for a oil-based primer, over silicone-based

“If your skin type allows, opt for a silicone-based primer over an oil-based in the heat to create a matte finish. Alternatively, select an oil-based primer with a lightweight formula as these are designed to be non-greasy. Applying primer not only helps in keeping your makeup intact but also prevents it from seeping into your pores, which tend to open up more on a hot day.”

By opting for a matte finish, you will be sure to avoid looking shiny in photographs and ensuring your look stays in place during a long day.

2. DON’T ignore the formula labels

“During the summer months, choose makeup products that specifically mention being waterproof or long-wearing, because these formulas are designed to withstand heat and humidity. You will be able to find these for your foundation, concealer and eyeshadows. It is also important to think about the length of your day and find makeup that states its lasting hours are longer than you need for heading down the aisle and dancing the night away.

If you have opted for a makeup artist to complete your bridal look, this is something they should have considered and will advise on, however always double check to make sure your look is exactly what has been previously practised.”

3. DON’T apply a heavy base

“Heavy makeup is more likely to smudge and melt in the sun. It’s best to apply your base makeup in small, thin layers rather than all at once. Consider using a beauty blender to build up your coverage gradually. Apply a layer, allow it to set, and then add another layer if needed. This method ensures a more seamless and long-lasting finish, as each layer has time to set properly.” This is especially important for those couples having a mainly outdoor day.

4. DON’T apply too much powder

“Once you’ve applied your foundation and concealer, lightly apply a translucent or setting powder to set your makeup. This step is crucial as it helps absorb excess oil and prevents your makeup from melting under the sun or looking shiny in photographs. However, be cautious not to apply too much product, as an excessive amount of powder can create a cakey appearance to the skin that is more likely to separate when exposed to sunlight.”

5. DON’T skip a setting spray

“While it may seem counterintuitive to add moisture to your face when trying to combat sweat or get a lasting flawless finish, setting sprays work differently. Adding a setting spray to your bridal makeup routine helps keep it in place, even during long days or in sweaty conditions. Setting sprays create a protective barrier, lock in your makeup, and provide a long-lasting finish. Some sprays control shine and offer a cooling effect. Like your base, choose a sweat-proof or long-wearing setting spray, apply it evenly, and let it dry naturally.”

6. DON’T use your standard formula mascara and eyeliner

“In hot weather or situations that may cause sweating like sun exposure, running mascara is a common issue that can ruin your photo-ready finish. To combat this, consider using waterproof mascara and eyeliner. These products are specifically designed to withstand moisture and are less likely to smudge or run, keeping your eye makeup intact even in the heat.

“Another option to enhance your eye makeup is by applying natural strip false eyelashes directly on your waterline using a strong lash adhesive. For best results, consider applying them in a cool environment and well ahead of the ceremony, to ensure they set into place properly.”

7. DON’T forget blotting paper

“This is the perfect duty for a bridesmaid! Have blotting papers to hand to absorb excess oil and sweat on your face whenever needed throughout the day. Blotting instead of rubbing or wiping your face helps to prevent your makeup from being wiped off whilst removing the residue and keeping shine at bay.”

… and some make up tips for grooms and people with facial hair:

By avoiding these common mistakes, grooms can ensure their makeup looks flawless and complements any facial hair for a polished, natural appearance during the wedding ceremony.

DON’T ignore skin exfoliation

Failing to exfoliate can lead to ingrown hairs and flakiness, which can affect makeup application. Use a gentle scrub to keep your skin smooth and free of dead cells the night before makeup application, then add moisturiser to ensure smoother application. However, one thing to avoid is using heavy, greasy moisturisers, especially under your facial hair. This can cause your makeup to slide off in the summer heat, even the next day! Opt for lightweight, non-greasy formulas to keep your skin hydrate without clogging pores.

DON’T apply foundation without blending

It’s so important to blend foundation into the edges of facial hair. If this is done in a rush, it can create noticeable lines and an uneven finish. Using a makeup sponge or brush to blend seamlessly can help foundation look more natural without getting lumps stuck on stubble or longer hair.

DON’T overload on powder

Avoid overdoing it with the setting powder, especially around facial hair. Excess powder can accumulate in a beard or moustache, creating a cakey appearance, and not only will makeup not last as long, but it could also give a matte, chalky look in photographs. Apply lightly to control any shine.

Magicians have been part of entertainment history for centuries, yet let’s be honest — many folks just can’t stand them. Perhaps it’s the eye-roll-inducing performances or the idea that wedding magic equates to cheap parlour tricks. But here’s the twist: while plenty of cringe-worthy magicians are out there, the world of magic is gradually shaking off its bad rep. Thanks to hit shows like Britain’s Got Talent and Penn & Teller, people are starting to see the genuine skill and artistry behind a top-notch magic trick. Great wedding magicians can really liven up your wedding reception and get guests talking – they’re actually a brilliant entertainment choice for weddings!

Breaking Down the Stigma around wedding magicians

Let’s be real: the old stereotype of the wedding magician with rolled-up sleeves, hideous ties, and an air of self-importance is a tough one to shake. It’s enough to make you want to dodge magicians altogether. And let’s not even start on those experiences with less-than-stellar performers. No wonder people are hesitant to give wedding magicians a shot.

But here’s the twist: magic can be genuinely enthralling when done right. Take Penn & Teller, for instance. They’ve created a reputation for their craft by blending humour, skill, and a pinch of scepticism. This mix has transformed magic into something beyond simple tricks—it’s evolved into a true art form.

Why People Dislike Magicians

Despite the growing appreciation for the art of magic, some couples still avoid the very idea of this kind of wedding entertainment. Let’s delve into why:

Invasion of Space: Your uni friends are catching up as they sit down for the wedding meal, and a magician materialises at their table. It could feel a bit like having an uninvited guest at a private party — awkward and unwanted, especially if they’re not feeling it. The good news? At weddings, most people are up for a giggle and curious to see who you’ve booked to entertain them!

Fear of Looking Stupid: Nobody enjoys feeling like the butt of the joke. Your wedding guests might be sat with people they don’t know very well, so the fear of being duped or outwitted can make some folks rather prickly. A good wedding magician will read the crowd and take care not to make anyone feel uncomfortable.

Fear of “Real” Magic: Believe it or not, some genuinely worry that magic might involve the paranormal. Umm….

The last magician they watched was sub-par. Unfortunately, a single bad performance can make all wedding magicians look like amateurs. But let’s be real: not all magicians are created equal. One dud doesn’t spoil the whole deck, and you can soon bring your guests around by hiring a great magician for your wedding!

Close-Up Chris’s Approach to Magic

I totally get it. I rarely watch other magicians since they’re often less than thrilling. My magic focuses on fun and entertainment, with the trick itself playing a supporting role to the overall experience. No rolled-up sleeves, no hideous ties, and certainly no taking myself too seriously. Just some good old-fashioned fun with a sprinkle of amazement!

One reason I champion my Close-Up Corner format is that it offers a personal and tailored experience for you and your wedding guests. It sidesteps the usual pitfalls of traditional magicians, like feeling awkwardly cornered or forced into participation.

By letting guests approach me on their own terms, I avoid the awkwardness of performing for someone who isn’t in the mood for magic.

Personal Experiences

Approaching a group of wedding guests and introducing myself as the magician sometimes leads to eye rolls and a quick “No thanks,” which can be pretty exasperating. I mean, just give me thirty seconds, and I’ll win you over. Seriously, it’s going to be fun, and we’ll have a great time. While I do manage to change their minds often, it’s still a bit discouraging that they initially brush me off so quickly.

Winning Over the Crowd

Fortunately, there are some well-kept secrets that a wedding magician can use to captivate guests.

Here are a few tricks I use to charm a tough crowd:

1: Make an impact! I’m not suggesting violence — I’m talking sharp, BANG WALLOP tricks that leave a lasting impression. “Wow, Julie. This guy’s skilled — let’s see what else he’s got.”

2: Comedy: Food might win a man’s heart, but humour is the key to cracking stone-cold misery guts over here. Get them laughing, and we’re nearly at the finish line!

3: Identify the leader: They’re like a rotten apple trying to boss around the poor magician. Not on my watch. I’ll charm them with a few compliments, lay on the charm THICK, and soon enough, they’re putty in my hands. For good measure, I’ll swipe their wallet, watch, and security number—after all, they had it coming for being a jerk. Of course, I jest. (a little).

4: Keep it short: Ultimately, when hired to entertain your wedding guests, I maintain respect and professionalism. If my tried-and-true tricks fall flat, I trust my judgment and wrap up the close-up show quicker than usual. That’s the brilliance of close-up magic – it’s so flexible, you can wrap it up faster than a disappearing act.

Remember, you can’t win ’em all. I’ll just save my tears for the drive home!

So should you book a wedding magician?

Not everyone dislikes magicians, which is fortunate for my career! However, some people still have the old perception that wedding magicians haven’t evolved since the 1980s. Don’t let this put you off booking! Do your research, find a wedding magician with great reviews and someone who’s approachable so you can ask questions.

Consider this a friendly dare if you’ve never been keen on magicians. The next time a wedding magician steps up to you at a wedding showcase or event, give them thirty seconds. You might find yourself entertained in ways you never saw coming.

A brilliant guest blog by Essex wedding photographer Ross Willsher Photography

Are you drowning in wedding overwhelm? In a spin from social media inspiration? Overloaded with wedding terminology? Fear not! Help is at hand. In this article we’re going to look at some wedding photography jargon and break down what photographers actually mean when they use certain words and phrases.

So, take a deep breath, get comfy and for the next 10 minutes, take some time to untangle that busy mind.

Whilst us professionals enjoy the wonderful world of weddings day in, day out, it is probably your first time planning such a milestone event and for that reason please remember one thing – it’s OK to not know everything, or indeed anything!

As a wedding photographer, I always tell my couples that no question is too silly or stupid and to always feel comfortable seeking clarity or double checking a piece of information. So here is my first tip – book suppliers who make you feel comfortable asking questions and sharing your insecurities and concerns.

Right. On to wedding photography jargon.

NATURAL VS. REPORTAGE PHOTOGRAPHY

So many people compliment me on how natural my images look. It’s lovely thing to receive praise for and I always seek to capture genuine smiles and dynamics in my couples. However, natural looking images do not mean that the photographer has not taken time to set up the photograph in one or more ways; whether that’s lighting, posing, directing etc.

Pure reportage photography (also referred to as documentary or photojournalism) involves no intervention from the photographer whatsoever. This approach simply documents events as they naturally occur. I do a lot of this photography throughout the day, but I do direct and curate certain shots when necessary; group photos and couple portraits in particular.

Many couples who do not like being photographed, tend to lean towards reportage photography for their day which is understandable as they feel awkward ‘performing’ in front of a camera. My only advice to you if you do not love how you look on camera, is to remember that with reportage photography, there will be no input to flatter curvier figures, hide double chins and emphasise your best bits. So, if you gurn when you laugh, or your posture is poor when you stand and chat with guests, this is what will be seen is all your photos. It is possible (and advisable) to incorporate some shots where the photographer can help you look your absolute best and direct you a little, in addition all those candid captures.

TYPES OF LIGHT

When we talk about ambient light, we are referring to any light in the shot that has not been added by the photographer or their team. Along with sunlight, ambient light can include light that comes from lightbulbs, streetlamps, and other artificial light sources.
If a photographer advertises themselves as a ‘natural light’ photographer, it means they do not use additional lighting in their work. There are some incredible natural light photographers but if your venue is quite dark or has tricky lighting, do check how they plan to work with this to ensure high quality images under these conditions.
There are many additional pieces of equipment photographers use to add light, but the most common one is known as a speedlite or flash. We often talk about whether the flash is on camera or off camera, and there will be many reasons a photographer will use their flash on their camera or on a stand away from their camera. Using a flash is a fantastic way of getting creative, and if you love those atmospheric night shots of couples, the chances are one or more flashes were used off camera to create these.

EDITING, FILTERS AND ‘PHOTOSHOPPING’

All professional photographers edit their images following a shoot. How much editing is done varies greatly from one photographer to the next. Always check what’s included in editing – sometimes it’s simply colour correction and enhancing what’s been shot, other times it’s removing blemishes and objects in the background.

Whilst not every photographer uses Photoshop to edit their images, the term ‘photoshopping’ has become synonymous with heavy editing and manipulating. You will how your own opinions on how much you want to be photoshopped in your wedding images.

You have probably used a filter on your phone and / or when uploading to social media. It’s a way of creating a certain look or feel with the click of a button. Many photographers use filters to give their images a consistent and distinctive look. Like many things in the wedding industry, some filters become particularly fashionable for a period before losing their appeal. Do think hard about hiring a photographer who utilises very distinctive filters as you want to make sure you still like the look of the images in a few years’ time when that style is less in vogue.

I hope that helps you understand some of the terms bounced around by us photographers, but before I go, here are some wedding photographer clichés that you may hear over and over and what they actually allude to.

‘TELLING THE STORY OF YOUR DAY’ – all wedding photographers worth their salt should be telling the story of your day (i.e. capturing all of the moments and details that matter), but many still market themselves as if this cliché puts them head and shoulders above everyone else. Focus instead on finding photographers that get to know you as individuals and create photos that resonate with you.

‘CREATIVE’ – you will also see lots of wedding photographers needlessly describing themselves as creative, when their portfolio will do the talking with regards to showcasing their creativity levels. If you think someone’s work is dull or boring, you’re not going to change your mind just because they’ve described themselves as ‘creative’ are you? You don’t need to be an expert in photography and / or art to identify what you do and do not like and whose portfolio impresses you. Trust your judgement.

‘DOG / CAT / COFFEE LOVER’ – This caused a little controversy when I posted about this on my social media, but if a wedding photographer’s social media bio or ‘About Me’ page is simply them describing how they are a coffee-lover or pet-owner, they perhaps aren’t looking to connect or get to know you on a deeper level. If that’s absolutely fine by you, and your main requisite is having a favourite animal or drink in common – fantastic. If you need a little more insight, look for wedding photographers whose bio says more about how they can help you feel good.

So there you have it! I hope you feel a little more clued up and ready to find your dream wedding photographer. There are lots of fab photographers out there so take your time and trust that the perfect fit is sat waiting for your email to pop into their inbox.

Happy wedding planning.
